Today I finished up the wax model. Did not try to do surface detail, but focused on form and structure. Here are a bunch of photos to give a better idea of what this will look like.
As you can hopefully see, the peghead will incorporate the head of the turtle. Any questions or comments are welcome. Now I am ready to finish the full scale mock-up

Comments? How about: "wow!"
If I had an animal totem, it would be the turtle. I caught hundreds as a kid (one day, I caught 23 - and carried them all home.) I knew this was going to be an awesome project when you got around to it...

Re: "Snapper" Archtop
Good on you Grant.
Me believe every loofer should build at least one "off the wall instrument" It brings delight to those that see and play it, not to mention the joy to the builders ego and the bragging rights that accompany such a build.
Builds like this can really be taxing and and challenging to ones chops. But also a joy to the builders sense of self accomplishment.
Those of you that know my work know that much of my stuff is a tad deranged, and although a feather in my hat, me is starting to question the validity of all the time and effort. Was it worth it? Yes! They all bless with chops that most loofers will never know.
Yes Grant, me applaud your efforts. Me suggestion however is to be careful not to slip into building too many of these weird and wonderful "folk art" instruments ~ they just seem to end up as wall decorations. Yet as an artist, me understand that we just "gotta do it."
So me applaud and wait eagerly to see how you birth this creation.

Them Turtles eh.
May dis old fool be so presumptuous to suggest,
making the effort to source out sound tracks of a turtles voice...
and keeping this as a audible visualization while tooling the plates and fabricating the bracing in such a fashion so that the turtles voice is imbued in the instruments voice and harmonizes with the bands voice. Quite the challenge far beyond just extracting a sound from some funkie looking build. Me has found that the more attention me pays to the wood while tooling its desired voice, the closer to the mark me gets.
May your heart, guide your hand in realizing the vision of your minds eye.
That is my humble 2 cents worth of babble.

Re: "Snapper" Archtop
So...is the sound board the belly of the turtle and the back the outside back shell of the turtle?
You are a crzy dude!
